General Overview
Second-hand clothes refer to garments that have been worn and used once or multiple times and are then recycled for reuse. These garments come from a wide variety of sources, including idle clothes from individual households and clothes donated to charities.
Description of Clothing Categories
In terms of styles:
They cover various styles of clothing, such as casual wear, including T-shirts, jeans, sweatpants, hoodies, etc.; formal wear, like suit sets, shirts, professional skirts, etc.; and evening dresses, for example, evening gowns, wedding dresses, etc. For example, T-shirts may have different neckline designs like round necks, V-necks, off-the-shoulder styles, and there are various styles such as printed ones and solid-color ones.
Size range:
It includes a wide range of sizes from baby clothing sizes (such as size 52, 59, etc.) to adult extra-large sizes (such as XXL, XXXL, etc.). Children's sizes may be divided into several stages according to age and height, such as the toddler stage (1 - 3 years old), the small child stage (4 - 6 years old), the medium child stage (7 - 10 years old), and other different size intervals.
Clothing materials:
Natural fiber materials:
Cotton is one of the most common materials. Second-hand cotton clothes are soft and breathable. For example, pure cotton T-shirts have good sweat absorption and are comfortable to wear.
Linen second-hand clothes have a unique texture and good air permeability and moisture absorption. They are often used to make summer clothes, such as linen dresses and linen shirts.
Wool second-hand garments have strong warmth retention. For example, wool coats and sweaters can provide warmth in cold weather. However, wool materials need to pay attention to possible shrinkage problems.
Chemical fiber materials:
Second-hand clothes made of polyester fiber have good wrinkle resistance and are easy to wash and dry quickly. Many sportswear are made of polyester fiber, such as sportswear sets.
Nylon second-hand clothes have good abrasion resistance and are often used to make clothes in parts that are frequently rubbed, such as the edge of the pockets of jeans.
Blended materials:
Second-hand cotton-polyester blended clothing combines the comfort of cotton and the stiffness of polyester fiber. It is common in shirts and other clothing. Clothes made of this material are not easy to deform and also have a certain degree of comfort.
Description of the Condition of Clothing
Classification of condition grades:
Generally, it can be divided into several grades such as A, B, and C. Grade A second-hand clothes are relatively new, and there may be only slight signs of wear, such as almost no visible wear on the collars and cuffs, no obvious stains, and the colors of the clothes are bright. The overall appearance is not much different from that of new clothes.
Grade B second-hand clothes have a certain degree of wear or slight stains. For example, there are some small stains on the clothes that cannot be washed off, or the collars and cuffs have slightly obvious wear, but it does not affect normal wearing.
Grade C second-hand clothes are in poor condition, and there may be many obvious stains, fading phenomena, or large areas of wear. For example, there are large holes and wear on the knees of jeans, and the colors of the clothes are obviously faded.
Description of worn parts:
The common worn parts include collars, cuffs, hems, elbows, knees, etc. The collars may become loose due to frequent wearing, the cuffs may be frayed, the hems may be worn by dragging on the ground, and the elbows and knees are prone to thinning or having holes after long-term friction.
Description of the Source and Treatment of Clothing
Source description:
Second-hand clothes come from a variety of sources. Part of them comes from individuals cleaning out their wardrobes at home. These clothes are usually recycled because the owners' body shapes have changed, their styles have changed, or they no longer need them after buying new clothes. Another part may come from donations to charities, which are idle clothes donated by the public.
Cleaning and disinfection situation:
Regular second-hand clothing processors will conduct strict cleaning and disinfection treatments on the recycled clothes. During the cleaning process, appropriate detergents will be selected according to the materials of the clothing. For example, for cotton clothes, mild detergents specially for cotton will be used, and for wool clothes, wool-specific detergents will be used. Disinfection methods may include high-temperature disinfection, ultraviolet disinfection, or soaking in disinfectants. For example, second-hand cotton T-shirts that have undergone high-temperature steam disinfection can effectively kill bacteria and viruses to ensure the health of the wearers.
Renovation situation:
Some second-hand clothes will also undergo renovation. For example, jeans with small holes will be patched up to make them fashionable items with personality; faded clothes will be re-dyed to restore their colors; or worn clothes will be cut and modified, such as transforming a long dress into a short top.
