I. Overview

 
Low-voltage aluminum cable is a kind of cable used for transmitting and distributing low-voltage power. It is usually suitable for voltage grades of 0.6/1kV and below. It plays an important role in the power system and is widely used in industries, commerce, civil buildings, agriculture and other fields.
 

II. Structural composition

 
  1. Conductor:
    • Made of aluminum. Compared with copper conductors, aluminum has a lower cost and a lower density, making the cable lighter and easier to transport and install. However, the conductivity of aluminum is slightly inferior to that of copper. Generally, a larger cross-section is required to ensure a certain current-carrying capacity.
    • Multi-strand stranded structure to improve the flexibility and bending performance of the cable, making it convenient for wiring in different laying environments.
  2. Insulation layer:
    • Generally made of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other insulating materials.
    • XLPE insulation has good electrical performance, heat resistance and aging resistance, and can operate stably for a long time at higher temperatures. It is suitable for various complex environmental conditions. PVC insulation has the advantages of low cost and convenient processing and is often used in occasions where the insulation performance requirements are relatively low.
  3. Sheath layer:
    • Usually made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene (PE).
    • It plays a role in protecting the internal structure of the cable, preventing mechanical damage, chemical corrosion and moisture intrusion from the outside, and ensuring the safe operation of the cable.

III. Performance characteristics

 
  1. Electrical performance:
    • Although the conductivity of aluminum is lower than that of copper, under the condition of reasonable selection of cross-section, low-voltage aluminum cable can meet the requirements of general low-voltage power transmission and has good conductivity to ensure the effective transmission of power.
    • It has a certain insulation resistance, which can effectively prevent current leakage and ensure the safety and stability of power transmission.
    • There is a certain capacitance and inductance, but in the design and use process, the influence on the power system will be reduced through reasonable cable structure and wiring method.
  2. Mechanical performance:
    • The mechanical strength of aluminum conductor is relatively low and it is easily damaged by external forces. Therefore, attention should be paid to avoiding excessive bending, stretching or squeezing during laying and use to prevent cable damage.
    • The sheath layer and armor layer of the cable can provide certain mechanical protection, enhance the tensile resistance, bending resistance and compression resistance of the cable, and prolong the service life of the cable.
  3. Corrosion resistance:
    • Aluminum is easily oxidized in the air to form a dense alumina protective film, which has a certain corrosion resistance to a certain extent. However, in some harsh environmental conditions, such as occasions with more corrosive media such as moisture, acid, alkali and salt, additional protective measures still need to be taken, such as using anti-corrosion sheath or surface treatment of the cable.
  4. Thermal performance:
    • Aluminum has a large specific heat capacity and relatively good heat dissipation performance. Within the normal current-carrying range, the cable can dissipate heat well and reduce the impact of temperature rise on cable performance.

IV. Advantages

 
  1. Cost advantage:

    • Light weight can reduce transportation and installation costs. In some cases where high-altitude operations or long-distance laying are required, the advantages are more obvious.

V. Disadvantages and countermeasures

 
  1. Low mechanical strength:
    • Disadvantage manifestation: Easily damaged by external forces. For example, collisions and squeezes may cause cable deformation and fracture, affecting power transmission. In occasions where frequent movement or greater external forces are required, the reliability is relatively poor.
    • Countermeasures: During laying, attention should be paid to avoiding excessive mechanical stress on the cable. Reasonably plan the laying path to reduce the possibility of the cable being collided and squeezed. For some special occasions, low-voltage aluminum cables with armored structures such as steel tape armor or steel wire armor can be selected to enhance the mechanical strength of the cable.
  2. Relatively small current-carrying capacity:
    • Disadvantage manifestation: Due to the higher resistivity of aluminum than copper, the current-carrying capacity of low-voltage aluminum cables with the same cross-section is smaller than that of copper core cables. In occasions where large currents need to be transmitted, a larger cross-section aluminum cable may be required, thereby increasing cost and laying space.
    • Countermeasures: In the design and selection process, according to the actual power load demand, fully consider the current-carrying capacity characteristics of aluminum cables, and reasonably select the cross-section specification of the cable to ensure that the cable can meet the requirements of power transmission. At the same time, the layout and operation mode of the power system can be optimized to reduce the current load of the cable and improve the efficiency of power transmission.
  3. Connection problem:
    • Disadvantage manifestation: Aluminum has active chemical properties. When connected with other metals (such as copper), electrochemical corrosion is easy to occur, resulting in an increase in contact resistance, heating at the connection, and even safety accidents such as fire.
    • Countermeasures: When connecting aluminum cables, special aluminum or copper-aluminum transition connection terminals and joints should be used to avoid direct contact between aluminum and other metals. At the same time, ensure the tightness and good conductivity of the connection, and regularly inspect and maintain the connection to find and deal with potential problems in time.
